The Tertiary Program has allocated $880,000 of funding to Curtin University, Edith Cowan University, Murdoch University, The University of Western Australia and iPREP for the delivery of work experience, scholarships and exchanges in agriculture over the next four years.
The Tertiary Program is one of three programs under the
Science and Agribusiness Connect (SAC) initiative. As the SAC initiative is funded by the Royalties for Regions program, all opportunities delivered under the Tertiary Program must provide opportunities for regional students, regional agribusinesses and in regional WA.
The Program provides opportunities to students within the agricultural sciences but students from outside these disciplines can also be considered.
Since commencing in late 2016 the Tertiary Program has so far funded:
- An iPREP round in agriculture, resulting in PhD students from across multiple WA universities living in the Shire of Dowerin and completing a consultation project for the local Shire.
- Three Honours scholarships ranging from investigating smart technologies for peri-urban agriculture, to investigating the impact of feeding methods and pasture species on the weight gain of cattle, to validation of hyper spectral camera technology on improving lamb and beef eating quality.
- A study tour of animal processing industry sites in China and regional WA, co-funded with the Commonwealth Government's New Colombo Plan,
The universities are scheduled to deliver many more work experience, research scholarships and exchange opportunities in agriculture over the next three years.
