  • First shipment of Liquefied Natural Gas from Prelude Floating Liquefied Natural Gas en route to Asia

Premier Mark McGowan today congratulated Shell and its joint venture partners for exporting its first shipment of Liquefied Natural Gas (LNG) from its Prelude Floating Liquefied Natural Gas (FLNG) facility.

Shell, along with joint venture partners INPEX, KOGAS and OPIC have announced the first shipment from the facility, which is located 475 kilometres north-north-east of Broome.

Since 2008, Prelude FLNG has partnered with not-for-profit organisations in the Kimberley region and supports a scholarship program with the North Regional TAFE, based in Broome.

Broome also serves as a base for aviation and some marine services for the project with personnel flying to and from the FLNG facility on flights from the Broome International Airport.

The McGowan Government is committed to working with resources companies to deliver more clean energy, deliver more jobs and diversify Western Australia's economy.

The LNG Jobs Taskforce is a State Government collaboration with industry that is working to maximise local jobs in WA's LNG industry, and create new opportunities for industry on the back of WA's competitively priced gas supply.

Chaired by the Premier, the taskforce includes Chevron, Woodside, Shell, Santos and INPEX, as well as representatives from APPEA and UnionsWA.

The Shell-operated Prelude FLNG facility is an offshore development that will produce natural gas from a remote field approximately 475km north-north-east of Broome in Western Australia. The Prelude FLNG facility will produce 3.6 million tonnes per annum (mtpa) of LNG, 1.3 mtpa of condensate and 0.4 mtpa of LPG.

Comments attributed to Premier Mark McGowan:

"I congratulate Shell and its joint venture partners on the first shipment of LNG from the Prelude facility.

"This is another sign that confidence is returning to Western Australia, and highlights Western Australia's position as an ideal place to invest.

"Through the LNG Jobs Taskforce, my Government is working in collaboration with industry to bolster our position as a global LNG hub servicing the Asia-Pacific region and creating new investment opportunities.

"We will continue to work collaboratively with industry to create long-term jobs for Western Australians."
