Science Minister Dave Kelly today announced the McGowan Government has committed more than $2.6 million in funding over three years to boost Western Australia’s blue economy.

The funds will go to the Western Australian Marine Science Institution (WAMSI) to support the implementation of The Blueprint for Marine Science.

The Blueprint for Marine Science will guide the foundation of long-term collaboration between all sectors operating in the marine environment.

WAMSI’s continued operations and the implementation of the Blueprint will support WA’s efforts to capitalise on opportunities offered by the Australian blue economy, which is expected to be worth $100 billion by 2025.

The implementation of the Blueprint for Marine Science will establish Western Australia as a hub for global marine science and ensure a strategic approach to marine science that supports industry, community and government activities off the coast of Western Australia.

The blue economy strikes a balance between reaping economic potential from our oceans with the need to ensure the ongoing health of our oceans ecosystems. The blue economy encompasses many activities for economic growth, including renewable energy, tourism, fisheries, oil and gas, and maritime transport.
