Science in the spotlight at ChemCentre Open Day

by WA Government News | Aug 19, 2017
  • Thousands of people attend ChemCentre Open Day 2017
  • Successful event helps build interest for careers in scientific fields

Science Minister Dave Kelly today joined thousands of science enthusiasts who were given behind the scenes access to see how Western Australia's top chemical and forensic experts operate.

The ChemCentre Open Day is a free, annual event that gives the public a chance to connect with chemistry in a hands-on environment and encourages children to make science their mission.

Held as part of National Science Week, this year's program focused on the State's chemistry 'superheroes' and the important role they play in safeguarding the community, industry and environment through their work.

Some of the highlights from the event included an opportunity for the public to try on HAZMAT gear and decontaminate a mock clandestine drug laboratory, and a chance to complete simple tasks while wearing alcohol and drug goggles at the WA Police booze bus.

Along with WA Police, other guests included the Department of Fire and Emergency Services, Greyhounds as Pets and some of WA's top scientists and forensic experts who performed a range of chemistry demonstrations.

The ChemCentre is the State's foremost provider of expert chemical and forensic science services to government, industry and the broader community.  For more information, visit http://www.chemcentre.wa.gov.au
