The State Government has secured long-term jobs and fuel supplies for Western Australia through extension of the State Agreement covering BP Australia's Kwinana oil refinery.

State Development Minister Bill Marmion said the State Government and BP had agreed to extend the agreement for 30 years, to be reviewed in 2050.

"The BP refinery is a major employer in the south metropolitan area, providing jobs for more than 700 people," Mr Marmion said.

"BP's Kwinana refinery is a vital strategic asset for Western Australia, supplying a substantial volume of the State's fuel requirements including essential aviation fuel to Perth Airport.

"This agreement extension will give BP the certainty required to make future investment decisions, with more than $80 million in maintenance activities planned, and further investments currently under consideration."

BP and the State Government have executed the variation agreement, which includes a number of new clauses to modernise the current State Agreement.

"These clauses include requirements for BP to develop local industry participation plans, and submit regular local content reports," the Minister said.

"This places extra local responsibility onto BP and provides added security to the livelihoods of West Australian workers and their families."

Legislation enacting the changes was introduced today into State Parliament.
