The Hon. Paul Papalia MLA, Minister for Defence Issues, is responsible for the Office of Defence West (Defence West), which was announced on 26 May 2017.
Defence West, within the Department of Jobs, Tourism, Science and Innovation (JTSI), is the Western Australian (WA) Government office responsible for supporting the interests of the local defence industry, to deliver the capability requirements of the Australian Defence Force and to grow our State’s exports.
Western Australian industries have the capacity and expertise to deliver across all capability streams with strengths in naval vessel construction and sustainment, complex systems integration, communications and cyber security.
Defence West supports the activities of the WA Defence Advocate Rear Admiral (Rtd) Raydon Gates AO CSM, to promote our world class, globally competitive capabilities both nationally and internationally. Defence West is:
- Assisting SMEs to increase their capability, capacity and competitiveness, enabling them to better contribute to national and international defence programs.
- Delivering industry engagement opportunities for local companies with international defence contractors and the Commonwealth Government.
- Undertaking a defence industry capability assessment and preparing the State’s first Directory of Defence Capability to promote our strengths locally, nationally and internationally.
- Preparing a defence strategy to assist the Commonwealth Government in delivering current and future defence capability requirements.
